When I was young I always had some By my side: A plastic cup of the bubbly stuff Well, water’s just fine And I don’t mind wine But you see My favorite drink is ice cold seltzy I’m from New York Well, Brooklyn of course Each Friday My buddy Phil drives his truck to me “How’s it goin’, Phil” “How ‘bout a refill?” Last week’s batch Was even better than the last The glass bottle shines With bubbles divine In the fridge I keep it cool, my favorite beverage I’ll tell you a tale Of love and travails The story’s true You could even say it happened to me

Bubbles 05:36
Ma said I should watch for dreamers I laughed as if I wasn’t one. I don’t need to lift a finger I close my eyes and here they come. Bubbles in the blue sky up Bubbles in the brown earth down Bubbles in my socks, the whole walk home I dreamt of 7 million bubbles in my mouth All the kids, they called me crazy But I just laughed and danced around the yard What the hell do you think you know about crazy You drink that sugar like there’s no tomorrow Bubbles in the Mr. Pibb Bubbles in the Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper Bubbles taste so good, I know Without that stinkin’ soda they’re even better I wish that I could say they listened My wisdom fell on twelve deaf ears But Sylvia her eyes just glistened She stayed until the others disappeared Bubbles in her big gray eyes Bubbles in her dark, brown hair Bubbles in between her words She said “I’d like to try some, I’m not scared” Sylvia, come meet my momma Mom’d you like to meet my friend She’d like to try a glass of our water But not straight from the tap Bubbles from the top fridge shelf Bubbles from the glass bottle Bubbles form the seltzer man Press that lever, here it comes, full throttle Sylvia took in a big gulp Sylvia let out a burp Sylvia began to look embarrassed But I just said “good seltzer should hurt.” Bubbles in my belly, and Bubbles in the back of my throat Bubbles when we open our mouths We’re a pair of toads: “croak” Sylvia was so delighted We drank the stuff all afternoon Then she said “I’ve gotta be home for dinner” But I’ll see you soon Bubbles in the butterflies Bubbles my bright red cheeks Bubbles in the heart-shaped clouds I think that I just made a new friend

I’ve never felt this way before A mix of respect and hots, galore Is this what they mean when they say “love?” My stomach felt like a shooting star Last Saturday night in your car The way that you looked at me I swooned I brought a long seltzer for our walk Inside my backpack it almost popped When I’m with you the pressure’s on As we raised the bottle to our lips You put your arm around my hips Like colliding ships we shared a kiss Everything’s moving kind of fast Up until today I’ve been chaste I want to make sure that this will last The rest of the summer flew right by Sylvia and I spent some time Then in September something changed

Sylvia 04:06
Sylvia, don’t leave You mean so much to me I’m sorry I feel so selfish today A friendship is so strange I think of all the ways I rearrange my life for my friends When I was so lonely You were the only I’ve often wondered Where I’d be without you Though seltzer’s just a drink I owe it more, I think At least I’m grateful It brought me to you She said you’re a good one And I’ve had so much fun I’ve lived in Brooklyn my entire life She said that the west coast Is also the best coast I wish it wasn’t so far away
5.
Life can feel so long The neighborhood kids gone Is it wrong? To stay in Brooklyn? Kim’s a lawyer now And James I wonder how He likes the service Makes me nervous Frankie’s got three kids And Mary’s always been a wiz Did you see her? On the quiz show? Ma said won’t you guess Who I saw just yesterday At the market Sylvia’s mom Asked me how you’re doin’ Sylvia’s a grad student In Seattle What’s she study? Carbonation Arts Say what? I missed that last part Did you say art? You must be joking Would Sylvia’s mom lie? To me, in aisle three of Ralph’s She looked me in the eye And told me Sylvia writes songs She paints, she drew a picture once Her momma showed me On her smarty phone I could barely make it out A pair of people making out In a bubble It was beautiful Anyway, her mom Gave me Sylvia’s number You should call her I think she misses you

Flying 03:34
Flying I’ve never seen the world quite like this Looks like my window’s A page ripped form a National Geographic On the phone I almost didn’t recognize her voice She sounded so much older But when she laughed I knew it was the same old Sylvia Please, she said Pay me a visit I know you’ll love it out west The trees are green And lots of people here like seltzer too “Excuse me, sir Would you like a drink” “Yes, seltzer” The flight attendant gave me the strangest look “I’m sorry, please, I mean club soda” Closed eyes I dream about a summer Fragile bubble in the past Then pop, it’s gone Return your seats to the upright position The water Looks so beautiful A million trees Is that a volcano The kid at the window Says that it could blow at any time
7.
While I’m waiting for my luggage My eyes wander around the room Sylvia is at the turnstile Her grey eyes looking for me too Bubbles in the hug hello Bubbles in the you look great Bubbles in the glad I caught you I was worried I was running late She and I went back to her place You’ll never guess where she lives Brooklyn Ave. NE She never moved that far, I guess Bubbles in the green street signs Bubbles in the old, wood house Bubbles in the big basement Where Sylvia makes all of her art Sylvia showed me some drawings A big sculpture of a seltzer can Then she sat at the piano And this is how her song began: Bubbles in the great Northwest Bubbles back East, surely Bubbles in the South and Midwest too Bubbles in the whole country Sylvia, your art’s amazing Then she looked me in the eye Romance, like a flame, can flicker But friendship never dies Bubbles in a friendship, pure Bubbles in the words of love Bubbles in seltzer water Bountiful elixir of life
